چکیده

We present numerical simulations of driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence with weak/moderate imposed magnetic fields. The main goal is to clarify dynamics of magnetic field growth. We also investigate the effects of the imposed magnetic fields on the MHD turbulence, including, as a limit, the case of zero external field. Our findings are as follows. First, when we start off simulations with weak mean magnetic field only (or with small scale random field with zero imposed field), we observe that there is a stage at which magnetic energy density grows linearly with time. Runs with different numerical resolutions and/or different simulation parameters show consistent results for the growth rate at the linear stage. Second, we find that, when the strength of the external field increases, the equilibrium kinetic energy density drops by roughly the product of the rms velocity and the strength of the external field. The equilibrium magnetic energy density rises by roughly the same amount. Third, when the external magnetic field is not very strong (say, less than ∼ 0.2 times the rms velocity when measured in the units of Alfven speed), the turbulence at large scales remains statistically isotropic, i.e. there is no apparent global anisotropy of order B0/v. We discuss implications of our results on astrophysical fluids. Subject headings: ISM:general intergalactic medium MHD turbulence

New mechanism of generation of large-scale magnetic fields in merging protogalactic and protostellar clouds

A new mechanism of generation of large-scale magnetic fields in colliding protogalactic clouds and merging protostellar clouds is discussed. Interaction of the colliding clouds produces large-scale shear motions which are superimposed on small-scale turbulence. Generation of the large-scale magnetic field is due to a ”shear-current” effect (or ”vorticity-current” effect), and the mean vorticity...

Saturation of the turbulent dynamo.

The origin of strong magnetic fields in the Universe can be explained by amplifying weak seed fields via turbulent motions on small spatial scales and subsequently transporting the magnetic energy to larger scales. This process is known as the turbulent dynamo and depends on the properties of turbulence, i.e., on the hydrodynamical Reynolds number and the compressibility of the gas, and on the ...

Three-dimensional Simulation of Magnetized Cloud Fragmentation Induced by Nonlinear Flows and Ambipolar Diffusion

We demonstrate that the formation of collapsing cores in subcritical clouds is accelerated by nonlinear flows, by performing three-dimensional non-ideal MHD simulations. An initial random supersonic (and trans-Alfvénic) turbulent-like flow is input into a self-gravitating gas layer that is threaded by a uniform magnetic field (perpendicular to the layer) such that the initial mass-to-flux ratio...

The paper deals with a simple spherical mean–field dynamo model of α 2 –type in the case of high electrical conductivity. A spherically symmetric distribution of turbulent motions is assumed inside a spherical fluid body surrounded by free space, and some complete form of the corresponding mean electromotive force is taken into account. For a turbulence lacking reflectional symmetry finite grow...

The origin and evolution of cluster magnetism

Random motions can occur in the intergalactic gas of galaxy clusters at all stages of their evolution. Depending on the poorly known value of the Reynolds number, these motions can or cannot become turbulent, but in any case they can generate random magnetic fields via dynamo action. We argue that magnetic fields inferred observationally for the intracluster medium require dynamo action, and th...

Three-dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of Cold Fronts in Magnetically Turbulent ICM

Steep gradients of temperature and density, called cold fronts, are observed by Chandra in a leading edge of subclusters moving through the intracluster medium (ICM). The presence of cold fronts indicates that thermal conduction across the front is suppressed by magnetic fields. We carried out three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations including anisotropic thermal conduction of a ...
